NASA ACADEMY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

2002 ANNUAL EVENT

For more information, contact John Feighery at john.e.feighery1@jsc.nasa.gov

Join us in Houston for the NAAA 2002 Annual Event! Held in conjunction with the World Space Congress, this year’s event celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the NASA Academy.

When do I need to make plans?
Start Now!! The World Space Congress is the biggest U.S. space event in 10 years, so flights and rooms are filling quickly. If you think you may attend, send an email now to Carie Kostak (Logistics Coordinator). Also let Carie know if you would like help finding a place to stay or transportation: ckostak@ems.jsc.nasa.gov

When is the Annual Event?
The World Space Congress will take place October 10-19. Most NAAA events are centered around the second weekend, Oct 18-20 (see preliminary schedule for details).

Do I need to register for the World Space Congress in order to attend?
Registration for the Congress is optional. The exhibit hall and some events are open to the general public, so only register if you intend to take part in one of the technical sessions. We tried to negotiate a reduced rate from the AIAA for Academy members, but did not have much success. They did offer to extend the early registration period for our members, so you don’t have to decide right now whether or not you want to register.

How much will it cost?
The organizing committee will charge a small fee (around $50) to cover the cost of various events. We are seeking sponsors to help defray costs. If you know anyone interested in contributing, contact VP for Finance, Mindy Gallo. Registration for the World Space Congress is $400 ($100 for students), but this is not necessary unless you plan to attend the technical sessions.

Where can I stay?
Information on lodging will be provided soon to those interested in attending. We will coordinate with local Houston alumni to provide extra beds, couches, etc. for those of you looking for the least expensive lodging. We are also considering reserving some hotel rooms in advance. If you have friends or family in the Houston area, we strongly encourage you to stay with them if possible. Also, if you can offer to share accommodations with a fellow alumnus, please let Carie know.

Is transportation available?
Unfortunately, Houston is not a mass-transit oriented city. Most events will require driving. We encourage the sharing of rental cars and rides to ease this burden.

What’s the next step?
At the end of August, we’ll send out detailed information such as maps, event information, and lists of hotels and restaurants. Make your airline reservations and lodging plans as soon as possible.

WORLD SPACE CONGRESS 2002: THE NEW FACE OF SPACE

It has been called the "meeting of the decade for space professionals." But the World Space Congress 2002, convening in Houston, is really much more than that because the words "space professionals" barely describe the breadth and depth of space activities in the next 10 years. Like any new world, space offers continually expanding resources for commerce, science, technology, and education. From the discovery of distant planets to medical advancements, from geological exploration to urban planning, from water on Mars to energy sources in developing nations, you'll find it all here. And you'll have an unprecedented look at how advances in space can and do improve life on Earth.
