We talked about a broad range of topics, however the discussion revolved around the motivations behind starting an alumni association and some of the specifics as to how we might do it.

There was considerable talk about what this organization should do. Some of the ideas mentioned as goals for the organization included: enrich the academy experience establish a secure source of funding for academy bring members of each year into contact raise public awareness about NASA and it's programs ensure the quality of future applicants

Soon the discussion became more focused on actually creating an alumni organization, and we were able to come to a consensus on a few very important points, including:

  • We should establish an alumni organization as an official entity as opposed to being content with the informal, virtual alumni association we currently have.
  • This alumni association should be internally focused in the beginning (establishment of an official entity, support of NASA Academy, providing service to the alumni) , but should consider as part of it's mission that in the future it might take on projects that are outwardly reaching as well (raising public awareness about space, etc.) We identified several tasks, and formed working groups which will have responsibility for completing them. In each case, a date was specified by which time each group will have made a progress report or presented it's work to the alumni for comments. All of these actions will be completed in time to plan for the alumni meeting in Boston In November, which will be the next opportunity for a large group to meet.
  • Working Groups:

  • Investigate legal issues/requirements for establishing a NASA Academy alumni organization as an official entity. Determine if Maryland is an appropriate location. Identify what must be done to meet the requirements. Brian Roberts (lead) Eric Anderson Gene Fuji Chris Lewicki status report: 10/11/96
  • Write/finish a Charter for the Alumni Association (a requirement for becoming an official organization?). Mike Moreau (lead) Eric Anderson Grant Bromhal status report (draft presented to alumni): 10/11/96
  • Draft a Mission Statement (also helpful for establishing an official entity) Eric Anderson (lead) Jim Brice Grant Bromhal Jane Thorpe status report (draft presented to alumni): 10/11/96
  • Explore communications issues and start a plan for managing: email list alumni directory web pages newsletters Jane Thorpe (lead) status report: 10/18/96
  • Veterans Day Reunion in Boston Adam London (lead)
  • This message does not capture everything that was discussed in the meeting, so if you have questions about anything I can try to provide more specifics.

If you are interested in contributing to any of the actions identified above I encourage you to contact the lead. These 3-4 person working groups will be essential for us to accomplish things as a group. The point was raised that people who for whatever reason can't contribute to the working groups or who can't attend reunions where big meetings are held will still want to be involved. We will make an effort to keep information flowing by using this list and other means. Also, as we draft the charter and mission statement, a web page will be set up for people to have access to the current versions and make comments, while keeping email traffic manageable.

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more updates as things develop.
