Summary of Meeting Actions
- talk to Ian regarding moving the July 3rd presentation to the date of the video conference.
- prepare a summary of the plan for NAAA interaction with the Academies this summer to be sent around to the Academy staff.
- Look into possibility of a copywrite for the NAAA logo.
David
- Call Dave Thompson re: NAAA scholarship and BOA
- prepare a summary of the ideas for the 1998 "Event" and send it around to the people who have volunteered to help plan/organize. Plan a telecon for early next week.
- send message to list regarding Rothenberg gift.
- follow up with Eric Anderson
Mike
- work on NAAA letterhead/logo
- send David BOA info regarding Dave Thompson
- put together plans for membership drive
- ask Chris about a ph type server for the database
- follow-up with George regarding personal web pages.
I. Non profit paperwork
- NAAA does not qualify as 501(c)(3) because it does not limit it's activities to exclusively educational activities (the NAAA engages in some social activities as well).
- Instead it falls under the category of a "social club," or 501(c)(7).
- This puts some restrictions on the amount of donations that can be accepted from non-members of the club, however this should not limit donations from companies that are considered affiliates of the NAAA.
II. Policy/guidelines regarding use of NAAA logo
- This came up due to Texas Space grant wanting to use the logo in a publication.
- EC will determine acceptable use on a case by case basis.
- Brian will look into copywriting the NAAA logo.
III. Space Experiment Module program
- Deadline came and went, there was not interest from alumni after Chet volunteered to head up a group.
- This is still an opportunity for the future.
- Would be worthwhile to have a group develop some ideas for the next flight opportunity.
IV. Gift for Rothenberg
- David will send a message to the list to find volunteers.
- $45 budget.
- Ideas include: space station model with NASA Academy node, picture of "Hubble-II", etc. Gift should have NASA Academy theme.
V. Personal web pages on NAAA server
- Not really feasible using our borrowed space on the SEDS server.
- All we can volunteer at this point is to provide links to personal web pages.
VI. Interaction with Space Adventures
- David will follow up with Eric regarding possible interaction with Space Adventures, per Eric's request.
VII. Letterhead and logo
- Mike has archived copies of letterhead, logos, etc that have been used in the past.
- Goal is to come up with logo and text that can be used on letters, business cards, newsletters, etc. and save in multiple formats to make it easily accessible.
- Try to get this done ASAP for use on Newsletter and upcoming work.
VIII. National event, and interaction with Academy during the summer
- Really looking at two categories of activities here.
- Plans for events or interaction with the NASA Academy programs during the summer,
- Plans for the "1998 Event" that has been discussed previously.
- Interaction with the Academy
- At GSFC, traditionally there has always been some sort of
reunion or alumni weekend over the July 4th holiday.
- Last year a NAAA video conference between all of the Academy
programs was held the last week of academy. Welcome RAs into the
NAAA, distribute information and membership forms.
- Ian has scheduled an NAAA presentation on July 3rd, and an
NAAA video conference the last week of academy. Brian will ask him
to combine the two. Local alumni could be invited to attend this video
conference.
- It would be nice to have one or more events as part of each
Academy that involve Alumni. We will encourage Academy staff to
come up with ideas for such activities, which the NAAA could help
organize.
- Brian will put together the ideas for NAAA interaction with the
Academy and send it to the Academy Staff. Mike will follow-up with
the Academy staff when he contacts them regarding the newsletter.
- 1998 National Event
- Diana Coleman, Jane Thorpe, Jim Brice have volunteered to help
with planning. David also has a list of several people who wanted to
be involved in organizing the summer event from the town meeting.
- We should try for a location other than GSFC this year in order to
provide different alumni with an opportunity to participate. Other
areas with heavy concentrations of alumni include Colorado, Southern
California, Boston.
- Start a paper conference which will be part of the annual event.
Modeled after the ISU alumni weekend, students and professionals
could present papers or posters on their work. Could provide extra
incentive for students and professionals to attend.
- Previous suggestions for the annual event include:
Shuttle launch (Florida)
Space Camp (Alabama)
Something coinciding with the NASA 40th Anniversary
- Consider an event in the Fall which would tap into all of the
excitement and enthusiasm of the new RAs. Would also give new RAs
an opportunity to participate that might not be there during the
summer.
- David will put together a summary of ideas to send around to the
people who have volunteered. A teleconference will be scheduled
early next week.
IX. ARC staffer
Brian met the new staffer for Ames this summer, who is not an
Academy alumnus but who is full of enthusiasm. They will be
communicating over email.
X. Spring Newsletter
- Mike is planning the Spring newsletter to come out around the
middle of May. It will not replace the May and June electronic
newsletters being done by Dave Kalman. Copies of the Spring
newsletter will be distributed to new RAs, alumni, Space Grants, and
others. An electronic version will be posted on the web as has been
done on the past.
- Will be looking for two volunteers within the next week.
Ideas for content:
- President's message, with overview of NAAA, broad goals, plans
for summer and 1998 event.
- Map showing distribution of NASA Academy RAs/alumni. Listing
of alumni including name, current title.
- Success stories, using the academy experience to further your
career. Dave(space horizons), Andrew(general), Brian/Jennifer
(KC135 flight)
- Updates on group projects: KIS, GEM
- 1997 banquet
XI. EC contributions to next electronic newsletter
- David: president's message
- Mike: newsletter/database update
XII. Orbital scholarship
- David needs to call Dave Thompson ASAP
- There is an ARC student who does not have any funding.
- Use this opportunity to ask DT about BOA
XIII. Database
- Mike is still waiting in Chris Lewicki for the database to come on
line.
- Mike should put together plans for spring membership drive. Do
this in conjunction with soliciting donations from alumni.
- Mike look into "ph type" server for database, open to queries from
Eudora, without actually logging on to the web.
