I. Status of Articles of Incorporation
- Paperwork has been submitted.
- Summary of Assets due to State of Maryland at tax time (April 15th)
- A fee paid and paperwork submitted to the IRS requires that the NAAA not make more than $10,000 per year for the next three years. If the NAAA reaches it's goal of $25,000 this year (indeed if it takes in more than $10,000), an additional fee must be paid to the IRS on the order of about $300.
II. Liability
III. Communications
- Chris L. has been making progress with the online database. Check back with him and Jane on January 26th for status
- setting up the email aliasing should be the next priority.
- Jake Yates has a good start on the Grad. School resources page at the NAAA website. He is still gathering new information from other alumni, including 1-2 paragraph write-ups about departments and research areas.
- Brian will supply his list of internships from his web site
- Mike will try to get a couple of other people involved to expand the resources page further (ie: job postings, resume database, etc.)
IV. NAAA Library/Archives
- It was suggested by Jake Yates that we try to pull together all of the various video tapes that have been made from the different academy programs into one library. Some video footage is in code 160, other stuff is scattered around the country in the personal libraries of alumni.
- This brings up the issue of storage space for video tapes, books, and other archival materials from the NASA Academy programs and the NAAA. Some books donated by Dr. Trainor may have already been lost in the code 160 "move." Other materials are currently at the SDT house(?)
V. ISU affiliation
VI. NASA Plane
VII. MSFC Working Group
- Have developed a plan for a letter writing campaign to three MSFC officials who have oversite or responsibility for NASA Academy.
- Beyond the letter writing campaign it is unclear what actions will be taken. Dave will follow-up with Catherine, and George Hunyadi regarding Dr. Soffen's trip to MSFC and what is to be done next.
- Dave and Mike need to provide Catherine with feedback on the draft message they wrote and encourage them to send it out to the list ASAP.
VIII. National Event
- Space Camp Weekend in Huntsville
- Pros: Show support for the MSFC program, Space Camp a draw to get people to come to the event. Should consider offering to have alumni volunteer at Space Camp for reduced price/increased access.
- Cons: There isn't actually an academy at MSFC this year so there won't be the opportunity for alumni to interact with RAs. There is not a large concentration of alumni in the Huntsville area (within driving distance) so it may be hard to get a large number to attend.
- National Rocket launch
- Reunion in Florida for a shuttle launch.
IX. Interaction with the Academies
- once per summer event b/w NAAA and NA's?
- We should develop a plan now for interaction with the different NASA Academy Centers and approach the Directors about it.
- Dave and Mike will brainstorm some ideas
- Dave will contact the directors at each center
X. Capital Campaign
- Brian will try to come up with an outline by Feb 9th
- Telecon for finance working group week of the 9th
- If between now and the 1st or 2nd week of March we can raise enough money, we will make the offer of scholarships to the Academy program directors.
XI. Board of Advisors
- consider what pairing is possible between the effort to set up the BOA and the effort to start the capital campaign.
- Mike will send David the outline for the board of advisors plan so we can finalize some of those plans.
XII. KIS
XIII. Ratification of Constitution and Bylaws
- Because of the legal requirements of the IRS, we will try to schedule a special election to ratify the constitution and bylaws.
- Mike will contact Jon Sims regarding a date and procedure.
- Mike needs to ask Jon about election write-ins for followup.
XIV. Newsletter Ideas
- Goal: two newsletters per year, April/May and August/September.
- Spring newsletter to announce plans for the summer months (most active for the NAAA. Copies distributed to NASA Academy RA's as an introduction to the Alumni Association.
- Fall newsletterto provide updates from the academy programs, including articles by most recent RAs.
- Content:
- Articles on research or other topics of interest from alumni.
- Updates or news regarding the nasa academy program (info from academy staff.
- Insider news from the nasa centers.
- Announcements regarding upcoming NAAA events
- Format:
- Electronic version to be sent over email
- Formatted version to post on web-page and to produce hard copies from.
- Volunteers:
- Dave Kalman volunteered to chair an electronic version of a newsletter (as he has done in the past. Jane Thorpe and Holly Ridings are potential contributors based on past comments.
- Addition volunteers needed to edit the newsletter for html and post it up on the web site, produce a limited number of hard copies, author individual sections.
- Might want to ask the communications working group for other
suggestions regarding the newsletter.
