Quo Vadis?

Dr. Gerald Soffen

This year, 2002, NASA Acadmey X is planning the tenth reunion for the 1000 graduates of the NASA Academies and the fifth anniversary of the Academy Alumnus Association. Drs. Moreau, London and Roberts are planning another big fund raising this year aimed at the million dollar level. Dr. Romig and several other alumni from SAI are flying in from overseas where they reside. Jane Thorpe is celebrating the second year of the Lockheed-Martin All Industry Academy. A small design group headed by Drs. Bayt and Lisano have met with the newly appointed NASA Administrator to plan the future decade of interaction of the NASA Academies with the Agency. The plan is for the Academies to become the first filter for many of the new employees both inside and outside of the civil service. David Goldstein has proposed that set-aside money be used as "incubator funds" to match the NASA DDF internal projects. These university-government-industry projects would be judged by the National Academy of Engineering, and used as a teaching tool for model university courses across the country. Already, there are courses in "Management of Genius," "Risk, Failure and Recovery," "Astrobiology" and "Learning, K-infinity." M. Leon has returned to the southern hemisphere where he has organized a new political effort to bring the ABC countries into the 21st centurty based on some revolutionary ideas. His plan is to join us. Dr. SoffenÕs latest idea for a Chinese Space Academy was mentioned in Space News.

Today, the future looks bright for the NASA Academies. It has come to the President's attention that the NASA Academies are a model for success. He has asked the his Science Advisor to prepare a Report on the motivational tools and the stimulus for the development of this novel idea.
