October 16-18, Washington, DC

NAAA Congress Program

General

The NAAA will hold the second annual NAAA Congress and NASA Academy Reunion the weekend of October 16-18th in Washington, DC. This year's activities have been planned to coincide with the celebration of NASA's 40th anniversary in Washington. The members of the NAAA have been extended a very special invitation to attend a reception at the cavernous National Building Museum Friday evening in celebration of this event. The reception, which will have a heavy buffet and an open bar (beer and wine), will go from 6-10 PM. Speaking at the event will be NASA Administrator Dan Goldin, and President Bill Clinton has confirmed his intent to speak. Business attire is requested. Additionally, the NAAA is organizing a panel of experts to discuss their views on the next 40 years of NASA. This forum will be primarily geared toward the NAAA members, but will also be open to the public. The second annual NAAA Congress will be held as part of the weekend. Several other less formal activities are also planned. A draft itinerary for the weekend follows.

Cost

Each NASA Academy alumnus plus one guest is invited to attend the NASA 40th Anniversary Reception at the National Building Museum, at a cost of $75 per person. Additionally, a conference registration fee of $20 will be charged to each of the attendees, part of which will be used to pay for two provided meals on Saturday. Guests of NAAA members can take $5 off the cost of the weekend when accompanied by an NAAA member. Please note: Tickets for the NASA 40th Anniversary Reception are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for all invitees, and are expected to go quickly. We are suggesting that you have your RSVP and payment postmarked by September 15th in order to maximize your chances to be able to attend the event. RSVPs will be accepted beyond that date, however there is a very good chance that tickets for the Friday night event will no longer be available by then.

Lodging

A block of rooms at the Days Inn, College Park, have been made available at a discounted price to the NAAA Conference attendees ($58.50 flat rate for 1-4 people per room). The hotel is two blocks from a Metrobus stop which runs approximately every 10 minutes to the College Park Metro station (~5 minutes transit time), and is about a 10 minute drive from Goddard Space Flight Center. You must call the Days Inn (1-301-345-5000) and tell them you are with NASA Academy to make a reservation. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis, as hotels book up quickly in this area. Since a number of people will probably be staying there, we will be informally arranging transportation as much as possible to and from weekend events.

If you would like to make arrangements to share a room with other people who are coming into town for the reunion, you can contact Deanne Rogers at drogers@pop100.gsfc.nasa.gov before making your reservation. She has volunteered to help coordinate these lodging arrangements. Otherwise, you are encouraged to make your reservation on your own ASAP.

If you have friends in the DC area and wish to make lodging arrangements with them, we encourage you to do so on your own.

Should you have any questions regarding the lodging arrangements, please direct them to Deanne Rogers at drogers@pop100.gsfc.nasa.gov

Travel

You are encouraged to fly into National or BWI, as these are easiest to access from the Goddard area, where most of the alumni helping to do pickups will be leaving from.

Last week, Northwest Airlines had many fares that were less than half the price of other carriers, however that may have changed since the end of the stike. Additionally, SouthWest and the new commuter airline formed by USAir generally have low fares to BWI.

Cars: If you are renting a car or if you own one and live in or near the area and are planning on driving, we need drivers to help pick people up from the airports and informally to make sure everyone gets to the various events. If you can help out, please let Deanne Rogers at drogers@pop100.gsfc.nasa.gov know.

RSVP

If you are interested in attending and have not yet received an RSVP form, e-mail the NAAA at naaa@nasa-academy.org.
