Email List Policies/Etiquette

Overview

The NAAA maintains a number of email lists for use by its members, summarized in the table below. NAAA members can manage their email list subscriptions and change list options such as receiving digest format using the web-based Mailman interface. You are responsible for keeping your email list subscriptions up to date separately from the information you provide in the NAAA database.

The naaa-alumni list is the main NAAA "chat" list. There are several "local-area" lists serving groups of active NAAA members around the country. Some individual academy classes have also setup lists for their center/year (ie: gsfc1994, msfc1997, dfrc2000, arc2003, etc). Finally, the naaa-news list is used by NAAA officials for official announcents, and general postings from alumni are not allowed.

Email List Instructions

You may manage your email list subscriptions by using the web-based Mailman interface found here: http://nasa-academy.org/mailman/listinfo/

This page lists all of the publically available email lists run by the NAAA. Clicking on a list name leads you to general information on that list, and gives you the option to subscribe. If you are already a subscriber, you can change your preferences by entering your subscription email address and list password. Then you can change your subscription address (on a single list or globally), turn on digest mode, etc). (Note, your password for the email lists is not the same as your database password.)

The Mailman interface also allows subscribers to view archives of all of the posts that have been made to the lists, which is useful if you have been out of touch with the NAAA community for a while.

Email List Policies

Subscribe access is generally restricted, meaning the list owner must approve subscription requests.

To reduce spam, postings to the lists are only accepted from list subscribers. This means if you post a message with a return address other than the one you are subscribed with, the message will be forwarded to the list-owner for approval. The same is true if the list name is not explicitely included in the To: or Cc: fields.

Sending messages with attachments is strongly discouraged, as subscribers receiving "digest" format will not be able to view them. Towards this end, messages exceeding 70 kB will be forwarded to the list moderator, and usually discarded. Rather than sending email attachments, you are encouraged to include a url-link to the documents in the body of your message.

Email List Etiquette:

Over the years the alumni list has grown and now includes over 400 subscribers. The list is a great resource for alumni, and has been the venue for many interesting discussions over the years. Please read and comply with the instructions below:

1. The alumni list contains e-mail addresses for hundreds of alumni and other professionals associated with the NASA Academy program. Before making a post, or especially before hitting "reply-all", stop and consider if the message is appropriate for this broad group.

2. Please do not unnecessarily send personal messages to individuals on the list. If you wish to contact someone individually, send them a private e-mail, by looking up their personal address in the NAAA Database.

3. DO NOT forward NASA press releases to the list unless you have a specific comment or want to start a discussion about something that appears in one. Most people on this list already receive them!

4. DO NOT under any circumstances forward jokes, petitions, or other similarly inappropriate material.

5. Do not include attachments.
